Our Story

No one should face barriers to care alone

D.A.V. & Elderly Assistants for Life, Incorporated was founded in 2009 and is incorporated in the State of South Carolina. The organization holds 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and is governed by a commitment to serve those who served our country and the elderly members of our communities.

Our founder’s vision was born from a deep respect for veterans and a recognition that too many fall through the cracks—unable to get to appointments, unable to afford care, and without family nearby to help. For over a decade, that vision has remained steady: to build an organization that meets people where they are and helps them get the care they deserve.

It was also born from a daughter’s love for her father. Read our tribute to Lethonia Burns

Our Mission

“No one should miss a medical appointment or go without care simply because they cannot get there, or because they have no one to help them at home.”

D.A.V. & Elderly Assistants for Life, Incorporated is dedicated to serving veterans, elderly individuals, and those with physical limitations who face barriers to accessing essential care. Our mission is to provide safe, reliable non-emergency medical transportation and compassionate home health care services to individuals who are unable to use public transit or arrange their own travel due to age, disability, or health conditions.

Our Journey

2009, 2018, and 2026

  1. 2009

    The Foundation

D.A.V. & Elderly Assistants for Life, Inc. was founded on May 27, 2009, and incorporated under the laws of the State of South Carolina. What began as a vision to help people in need became the foundation of an organization committed to serving veterans, seniors, people with disabilities, and individuals who need assistance maintaining independence and dignity in their daily lives.

The organization was inspired by a personal commitment to service, compassion, and family. Cynthia H. White, founder and President/CEO, recognized that many people—especially older adults, veterans, and individuals living with disabilities—often face challenges accessing transportation, healthcare, supportive services, and the basic assistance needed to remain safely connected to their communities.

From the beginning, D.A.V. & Elderly Assistants for Life, Inc. was established with a simple but powerful belief: people should not have to face these challenges alone. The organization’s foundation was built on compassion, dignity, responsibility, and a commitment to helping those who are often underserved and overlooked.

The 2009 founding marked the beginning of a journey that would continue to grow with the changing needs of the communities we serve.

  2. 2018

    Expanding Care

As the population of older adults, veterans, and people living with disabilities continued to grow, so did the need for dependable transportation, healthcare access, supportive services, and assistance with daily living. By 2018, D.A.V. & Elderly Assistants for Life, Inc. was continuing to develop its vision of connecting people to the services and resources they needed to remain independent, supported, and engaged in their communities.

The need was especially significant throughout the Lowcountry. In Beaufort County, approximately 51,563 residents were age 65 and older, while 18,418 veterans and 23,386 people were living with a disability. Jasper County had approximately 6,565 seniors, 2,250 veterans, and 4,222 people living with a disability. Hampton County had approximately 3,560 seniors, 1,252 veterans, and 2,459 people living with a disability. Colleton County had approximately 7,611 seniors, 1,735 veterans, and 5,088 people living with a disability.

These numbers demonstrated the significant population of people throughout the service area who could need transportation, access to medical care, supportive services, and assistance with daily living. D.A.V. & Elderly Assistants for Life, Inc. recognized that as these communities continued to change, the organization would need to grow with them.

The 2018 chapter represented an important step forward—from establishing the foundation in 2009 to strengthening the vision of an organization capable of reaching more people, serving more communities, and responding to the growing needs of veterans, seniors, people with disabilities, and families.

  3. 2026

    National Recognition

17 Years of Dedication, Service, and Pride

For 17 years, D.A.V. & Elderly Assistants for Life, Inc. has remained committed to serving veterans, seniors, disabled citizens, and others who need assistance maintaining independence, dignity, and access to essential care. Our organization was built from a vision of service, compassion, and responsibility to people who should never have to face transportation and care barriers alone.

The population we serve is growing, and so is the demand for dependable support. National aging trends show how rapidly the need for senior services is expanding. The U.S. population age 65 and older increased from approximately 52.4 million in 2018 to approximately 61.2 million in 2024—an increase of about 8.8 million people, or roughly 17%. At the same time, the Baby Boomer generation—Americans born from 1946 through 1964—is moving deeper into the years when transportation assistance, healthcare access, home-based support, and help with daily independence can become increasingly important.

These numbers are not simply statistics to us. They represent real people, real families, and real communities that need reliable services.

D.A.V. & Elderly Assistants for Life, Inc. sees an opportunity to build something much larger and stronger for the communities we serve. We want to become a recognized community resource for the care, transportation assistance, and support our veterans, seniors, and disabled citizens need.

But vision alone cannot put vehicles on the road, establish an office, purchase equipment, recruit and train volunteers, coordinate services, or create the operational capacity required to meet a growing demand. We need help bringing the vision to life.

Our organization has operated with limited resources while carrying a mission that requires infrastructure, transportation resources, administrative support, technology, insurance, equipment, outreach, volunteer coordination, and dependable operating funds.

We do not currently have the full office, equipment, staffing, transportation fleet, volunteer base, and operational infrastructure needed to serve our communities at the level we envision. That is why we are actively seeking community grants, government grants, charitable contributions, corporate and foundation partnerships, volunteers, fundraising support, and other community resources.

Every investment in our organization helps move us closer to having a place to call home—a dependable community base from which we can coordinate transportation, connect people with needed services, recruit and support volunteers, build partnerships, and expand our reach.

Imagine D.A.V. & Elderly Assistants for Life, Inc. having a permanent home in the community—a place where our mission is visible, where volunteers can come together, where services can be coordinated, where veterans and seniors know they have somewhere to turn, and where partnerships can grow.

That home would be more than a building. It would be a symbol of 17 years of perseverance and service. It would be a place where a vision becomes an operation, where community support becomes measurable community impact, and where D.A.V. & Elderly Assistants for Life has the foundation it needs to expand its ability to serve.

D.A.V. & Elderly Assistants for Life is ready to grow responsibly, strengthen its capacity, expand transportation and care-support services, recruit volunteers, establish the operational foundation needed, and become a stronger community resource for veterans, seniors, and disabled citizens.

Our Long-Term Vision

We are building a home for those we serve

We are not only building services. D.A.V. & Elderly Assistants for Life, Incorporated is actively seeking funding to acquire or construct a commercial office building that will serve as our permanent base of operations. That facility will house:

  1. 01Administrative offices
  2. 02A vehicle dispatch center
  3. 03Client intake space
  4. 04A welcoming point of contact for veterans and families

A permanent location means stability, visibility, and the ability to grow our impact for years to come. We are currently working to secure funding through federal grant programs, including the Department of Veterans Affairs Highly Rural Transportation Grants program and the Veterans Home Health Care Services Grant program, to expand our capacity and bring these services to more South Carolinians in need.
